HONG KONG – China's recently-listed film conglomerate Huayi
Brothers has come on board Dante Lam's now in-production crime
thriller "Stool Pigeon."
Huayi will take an equity stake and a production credit in the HK$32 million ($4.13 million) picture, alongside Hong Kong's Emperor Motion Pictures and SIL-Metropole Organisation. Huayi will also handle Chinese mainland rights. Emperor is handling rights in all other territories. "Stool Pigeon" is being touted as a follow-up to last year's breakout hit "The Beast Stalker." But the new picture is less of a police procedural than "Beast Stalker" and is not connected in terms of story. Script is again by Jack Ng, but in a reversal of previous positions, the film stars Nick Cheung Ka-fai as a cop and Nicholas Tse Ting-fung as a police informant trying to infiltrate Triad gangs. At the beginning of the month, Huayi became the first Chinese film studio to become a public listed company when it listed on Shenzhen's new ChiNext exchange. Emperor and Huayi recently collaborated on Huayi's "The Message" and are currently collaborating on Emperor's star-driven martial arts pic "Shaolin."
