European Film Awards have new home

2009 ceremony will shift to western Germany

BERLIN -- The European Film Awards, Europe's most important film prize, will be held in 2009 in the western German city of Essen, not in the German capital Berlin.

The EFAs traditionally alternate between Berlin, where the European Film Academy has its base, and another European capital. This year's event is set for Dec. 6 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

But political lobbying from the state of North-Rhine Westphalia, where Essen is located, persuaded the Academy to move the 2009 gala. NRW hopes the event will further boost its image as one of Europe's leading film locations.
