PARK CITY -- Sony Pictures Classics has picked up North American
and select Latin American rights to "An Education," a Nick
Hornby-penned period romance that has been buzzing with attention
from multiple distribution suitors since its Sunday afternoon
screening.
The deal for Lone Scherfig's 1960s-set dramedy closed Monday night
for about $3 million-$4 million.
The CAA-repped film, which stars festival breakout Carey Mulligan
as a teenager who gets involved with a charming older man (Peter
Sarsgaard), attracted serious interest from Fox Seachlight,
Overture, Lionsgate, the Weinstein Co. and Focus Features. But SPC
ultimately made the right pitch after Fox, in particular, was
unable to meet the sellers' demands.
The Sony specialty division also picked up the Carlos
Cuaron-directed soccer comedy "Rudo y Cursi" a week before the fest
began.
