Writer-director Ken Kwapis will direct "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," based on the best-selling novel of the same name, for Warner Bros. Pictures and Alcon Entertainment. CBS' "Joan of Arcadia" star Amber Tamblyn is first on board to star in the ensemble for Kwapis, with shooting scheduled to begin in mid-May.
Penned by Delia Ephron from the novel by Ann Brashares, the coming-of-age story centers on four friends during the first summer they are separated from one another. They vow to keep in touch by circulating a magical pair of secondhand jeans that fits each of them perfectly. The other three actresses to round out the ensemble are expected to be announced shortly.
"This is a wonderfully crafted script, and I'm convinced that it's a film that will connect with audiences everywhere," said Kwapis, who plans to shoot the film in Vancouver and Santorini, Greece.
Producers on the project include Debra Martin Chase, Denise DiNovi and Alcon's Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove.Alcon's Kira Davis and Steven Wegner are co-producing along with Christine Sacani. Alison Greenspan and Leslie Morganstein are executive producing.
Kwapis just completed shooting the half-hour pilot "The Office" for NBC based on the Golden Globe-winning BBC comedy series. Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer star in the Stateside adaptation.
For the past several years, Kwapis has been director and producer of the Emmy-winning "Malcolm in the Middle." The helmer also recently finished shooting the indie feature "Sexual Life," which he wrote and directed for the fledgling Showtime Independent Films.
Kwapis is repped by Writers & Artists Group International, manager Rick Berg at Neverland Films and attorneys Craig Jacobsen and Jeanne Newman at Hansen, Jacobsen, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren & Sloan.
Tamblyn is repped by Endeavor and Joan Hyler at Hyler Management. She appeared in the opening sequence of the hit film "The Ring." Her freshman series "Joan" landed her a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a drama series.
