Aniston plots role in redo of 'Gambit'

Aniston's 'Gambit'

Jennifer Aniston has committed to star in "Gambit," the remake of the 1966 British caper film that starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine, her rep confirmed.

The project had been set up at Universal Pictures, with Burr Steers signed on to write and direct. It is known that Steers did a rewrite of the script -- originally penned by Joel and Ethan Coen -- but later stepped off due to creative differences, sources said. The project then went into turnaround and now has production designer-turned-director Bo Welch ("Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat") on board to helm.

The film revolves around a British thief who comes up with a fool-proof plan to steal an expensive statue from one of the richest men in the world. His strategy involves the participation of a beautiful woman (Aniston) who happens to be the spitting image of the rich man's late wife. However, nothing goes as planned. Sources said Ben Kingsley also is attached to star as the millionaire, but his reps could not be reached for comment.

Producer Mike Lobell, who has been shepherding the redo for more than five years, will now take the project out to set up with Aniston on board.

"Gambit" marks the third project Aniston has boarded since the end of her work on "Friends." She is next set to topline Warner Bros. Pictures' untitled Ted Griffin project for studio-based Section 8 and Paula Weinstein. (MacLaine attended a table reading for the Griffin dramedy and is in the mix for a role in the project.)

Aniston also has signed on to star in "Diary" for Columbia Pictures. She's repped by CAA.
