New 'School' in session for MGM, Cedric
Cedric in 'School'
April 23, 2004
MGM is developing a remake of the Rodney Dangerfield starrer "Back to School," which the studio envisions as a starring vehicle for Cedric the Entertainer. David Ronn and Jay Scherick are writing the script.
The remake will be based loosely on the 1986 Orion Pictures comedy, which grossed more than $91 million domestically. Co-written by Dangerfield, the film followed the exploits of a fun-loving businessman who enrolls in college alongside his disheartened son to help him get through school.
Cedric and Eric Rhone's MGM-based A Bird and a Bear Entertainment shingle might board the project as a producer. Toby Jaffe and Erik Baiers are overseeing the project for the studio.
A Bird and a Bear Entertainment inked a two-year, first-look deal at the studio in the fall with a plan to develop features for the partners to produce -- in some of them, Cedric also could star. Cedric serves as CEO, while Rhone is president.
Cedric's most recent feature, Fox Searchlight's "Johnson Family Vacation," claimed the third spot at the boxoffice when it opened two weeks ago and has grossed $21.7 million to date.
Cedric is shooting MGM's "Be Cool," the sequel to "Get Shorty," starring John Travolta. He next appears in Paramount Pictures' "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" and also has been tapped for Paramount's remake of "The Honeymooners."
Cedric and Rhone are represented by CAA and attorney Nina Shaw of Moonves & Shaw.
