MTV working in real time on unscripted celeb series

MTV mulls pilots

Andrew Wallenstein
MTV has ordered 10 pilots in consideration for series orders for the 2004-05 season.

True to form from the home of "The Osbournes" and "Making the Band," the pilots plant celebrities -- including Cameron Diaz, Wilmer Valderrama and Frankie Muniz -- in unscripted settings.

Diaz's project, known as "Trippin'," involves her and famous friends like Drew Barrymore traveling to faraway lands to spotlight environmental issues.

Valderrama ("That '70s Show") hosts a street-racing competition that gets help from professional races. Executive producers are Patrick Byrnes, Glasgow Phillips and Heather Waters.

Muniz stars in "Granted," in which the "Malcolm in the Middle" star helps viewers live out their fantasies. The project is being produced by David Franzke, Mark Schulman and Jeff Golenberg of 3 Arts Entertainment.

Fonzworth Bentley, best known as the assistant to Sean Combs on MTV's "Band," will executive produce and host "Borrow My Crew," in which a "glam squad" gives a viewer an image makeover.

Reality producer Bruce Nash is teaming up with executive producer Michael Bloom ("Rocket Power") for "Who Wants to Be a Superhero," in which comic book fans get the chance to have their own original superhero creations transformed into a comic book by "Spider-Man" creator Stan Lee.

Other pilots ordered are "Dedicated," a music video dedication series with artist Omarion; "Zombie Chronicles," a horror-themed series from rocker Rob Zombie; "Kappa Mikey," which is centered on the world of anime; and "House Arrest," in which celebrities are sent back to live with their parents.

MTV also is developing a series with chart-topping rapper Jay-Z that brings artists from different musical genres together to mesh their different styles into a new sound.
