Damon infiltrating Scorsese's 'Departed'
'Departed' arrival
July 23, 2004
Matt Damon, who hits theaters today in "The Bourne Supremacy," is in negotiations to star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Departed," Warner Bros. Pictures' English-language remake of "Infernal Affairs" that Martin Scorsese is directing.
Based on a trilogy of popular Hong Kong crime films directed by Lau Wai-keung and Mak Siu-fai, the story revolves around a gangster who infiltrates the police department and a cop infiltrates the gangs at the same time. The two find out that a mole is in each organization and race to find each other's identity.
Scorsese's version shifts the action to Damon's hometown of Boston. Instead of Hong Kong triads, the criminal element is the Mafia. William Monahan ("Kingdom of Heaven") adapted the material.
Damon would portray the mob's mole, while DiCaprio plays the undercover cop.
Brad Grey, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt's Plan B shingle is producing, while Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee and Doug Davison executive produce.
Dan Lin is overseeing the project.
Damon is shooting "Ocean's Twelve" and recently completed "The Brothers Grimm." He next stars in "Syriana."
He is repped by Endeavor and attorney Sam Fischer.
