DGA taps Apted for 2nd term

Apted re-elected

DGA president Michael Apted was elected to a second term over the weekend during the union's biennial national convention.

Steven Soderbergh was elected to the guild's second-highest position, national vp, and Gilbert Cates was re-elected secretary treasurer in Saturday's election at DGA headquarters in Los Angeles.

"I'm delighted to be re-elected and have a strong team around me," Apted said of his new two-year term. "The DGA is forever on the front lines, protecting our creative and economic rights and fending off threats to our livelihoods such as runaway production, piracy and the theft of intellectual property. I am honored to be standing on the front lines with this guild, and look forward to continuing my work as president."

Added Soderbergh: "Michael Apted is a true leader -- in this guild, in the industry and in his craft. His passion, diligence and integrity serve as an inspiration and a model for all our members."

DGA's moves reflected the union's trademark stability, whereas SAG and WGA saw new groups sweep into power over the past week -- cohorts that vowed to take a more confrontational stance in contract talks and organizing.

Nominations and voting were handled from the floor of the convention by the 130 delegates.

The convention also saw the election of other officers and a new board.

The newly elected officers were 1st vp Paris Barclay, 2nd vp Ed Sherin, 3rd vp Taylor Hackford, 4th vp William Brady, 5th vp Betty Thomas, 6th vp Gary Donatelli and assistant secretary-treasurer Scott Berger.

The newly elected board members were Herb Adelman, LeVar Burton, Stephen Glanzrock, Victoria Hochberg, Jeremy Kagan, Kim Kurumada, Michael Mann, John Rich, Barbara Roche, Max Schindler and Lee Chemel.

Elected as associate board members were Craig Bigelow, Anita Cooper-Avrick, Duncan Henderson, Liz Ryan and Mary Rae Thewlis.

The alternate board members are Dan Algrant, Robert Butler, Lesli Glatter, Rod Holcomb, Randal Kleiser, Vincent Misiano, Jonathan Mostow, Donald Petrie, Thomas Schlamme, Jesus Trevino, Carl Weathers and Eames Yates.

Elected as second alternate board members were Lee Blaine, David Hakim, Maria Jimenez Henley, Dennis Mazzocco, Kathleen McGill and Elena Santaballa.

Apted, a DGA member since 1978, joined the Western Directors Council in 1997 and the national board in 2001.

Apted was elected 5th vp in 2002 and to his first term as president in 2003. That vote came as a surprise in June 2003 after Martha Coolidge unexpectedly declined to seek re-election.

During Apted's first term, the DGA renewed its contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers and overhauled the "film by" credit. The union has also worked to increase its jurisdiction in reality TV by making it easier and cheaper to produce network reality shows under union contract.

Apted's directorial experience has ranged from independent films and documentaries to television and major features. He has also served on the DGA Independent Directors Committee since its inception.

His feature film credits over a 37-year-career include such pictures as "Coal Miner's Daughter," "Gorillas in the Mist," "Thunderheart," "Nell," "The World Is Not Enough," "Gorky Park," "Tell No One" and, most recently, the first three episodes of the HBO series "Rome." He is currently in production on the feature "Amazing Grace."
