Luis Mandoki has been hired to direct "The Winged Boy" for Gold Circle Films.
"Boy" is a based on an unpublished story by Mary Hayley Bell, widow of the late actor John Mills. Described as a family film with a slice of magical realism, the story centers on a young boy in a contemporary Irish village who begins to grow wings and then starts to fly.
The screenplay was co-written by Bell's grandson Crispian Mills and Michael Geary. Malia Scotch Marmo is rewriting.
The picture is slated for production in Ireland and the U.K. in the spring.
Producing are Paul Brooks and Gina Carter, while Norm Waitt, Scott Niemeyer, Stephen Fry and Simon Brooks are executive producing. Brad Kessell is overseeing for Gold Circle.
Mandoki's latest film, "Innocent Voices," which is seen as a possible Oscar contender in the foreign-language film category, will be released Oct. 14 in the U.S following a rare screening Wednesday at the United Nations, hosted by Jennifer Connelly and Queen Noor of Jordan.
"I've always been a fan of Luis' work," said Gold Circle president Brooks, "but when I saw 'Innocent Voices,' I was just knocked out and knew his sensibility here would be the perfect match for our movie."
Mandoki, who is repped by WMA and the Gotham Group, counts "When a Man Loves a Woman," "Message in a Bottle" and "Angel Eyes" among his credits.
Gold Circle, which has a deal with Universal, produced "White Noise" to the tune of $55.9 million and also made "The Wedding Date." It has "Slither" and "Whisper" on tap for release early next year, and its "Griffin and Phoenix," a co-production with Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, is shooting in New York.
