Reality interrupted
Oct 26, 2005
WGA West organizers interrupted a panel discussion about reality television Tuesday to make their case that reality TV writers and editors deserve union protections. The guild said that members of its reality organizing committee passed out leaflets and engaged panelists during a conference at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. The panelists included Fox Reality Television operations chief David Lyle, Jonathan Murray of Bunim-Murray Prods., "American Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, "The Amazing Race" executive producer Bertram Van Munster and ABC vp alternative series and specials Andrea Wong. WGAW has filed two class-action suits against producers over alleged violation of California labor law in the production of reality series.
