Garrett inks at WMA; spinoff looks unlikely

Garrett to WMA

Cynthia Littleton
Everybody at WMA loves Brad Garrett, even if it doesn't look like he's going to be starring in an "Everybody Loves Raymond" spinoff anytime soon.

Garrett has signed with the agency for representation in all areas except for personal appearances, where he remains with ICM. The Emmy-winning actor also continues to be repped by longtime managers Glenn Robbins and Doug Wald of Raw Talent and attorney Michael Gendler.

Garrett signs with WMA after forgoing talent agency representation in TV and film for several years. The move also comes as Garrett is looking to set up his next TV series gig now that hopes have dimmed that a "Raymond" spinoff featuring Garrett's woebegone Robert Barone character will ever see the light of day on CBS.

On the night of the 57th annual Primetime Emmy Awards telecast in September, when "Raymond" trumped the favored "Desperate Housewives" by winning the top comedy series prize, Garrett enthusiastically told the national television audience that "there may be a spinoff" (HR 9/20). "Raymond" wrapped its nine-season run on CBS in May.

Sources said CBS finalized a deal with Garrett for the show but could not come to terms with "Raymond" creator/executive producer Phil Rosenthal and a handful of veteran "Raymond" writers who were targeted to help Rosenthal launch the spinoff. Rosenthal and CBS declined comment on the matter Friday.

Garrett is starring opposite Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane in the Broadway revival of "The Odd Couple." He's scheduled to remain with that show through year's end.

Garrett won his third supporting comedy actor Emmy for his work on "Raymond" in this year's Emmy derby. His recent feature credits include voice-casting on 2003's "Finding Nemo" and 2004's "Garfield: The Movie."
