John Hegeman has been appointed chief operating officer of Fox Filmed Entertainment's new division devoted to teens and young adults. Along with Peter Rice, who is heading the unit and who announced the appointment Wednesday, Hegeman will manage all aspects of the company, including production, acquisitions and distribution.
Charged with producing and acquiring as many as eight films per year, the new division will focus on a mix of genres, including comedies, actioners, thrillers and dramas. It also will create new-media content for the Internet, mobile devices and other emerging technologies, working with the newly formed Fox Interactive Media and its youth-oriented brands, MySpace.com and IGN. The division will have its own production and marketing staffs but will distribute its movies through 20th Century Fox.
Hegeman was president of worldwide marketing at Lionsgate Entertainment, a post he held from August 2004 until his resignation in December (HR 12/9). There, he was involved in the campaigns for "Crash," "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" and the two "Saw" movies.
In his position as president of worldwide marketing at Artisan Entertainment from 1997-2000, Hegeman was involved in the breakout release of 1999's "The Blair Witch Project," for which he designed online marketing techniques.
"John is an exceptional, creative executive who has broken new ground and enjoyed wild success throughout his career," Rice said.
Added Hegeman: "Young adults are such a sharp, intelligent audience. It is going to be a lot of fun joining Peter in trying to deliver unique and immersive entertainment to them."
Hegeman also held executive roles at Revolution Studios, where he oversaw acquisitions, genre development and online initiatives as well as assisting in the marketing of such features as "Hellboy" and "The Forgotten."
Before joining Revolution in 2002, he was president of Distant Corners Entertainment Group, a company he launched that developed and produced more than 20 genre franchise properties, including the theatrical release "Darkness Falls," across all media and licensing platforms.
He also spent time at MGM/UA, Orion Pictures and Orion Classics.
