Oscar nominee David Strathairn is going from the television studio to the football field.
The "Good Night, and Good Luck" star is joining Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox in McG's untitled Marshall University football project for Warner Bros. Pictures. Thunder Road's Basil Iwanyk is producing along with McG and his Wonderland Sound & Vision shingle.
The movie revolves around the events following the 1970 plane crash that killed members of the West Virginia-based Marshall football team, along with most of its coaching staff, sports commentators and many of its local boosters.
Strathairn will play Marshall University president Dedmon, who is profoundly affected by the loss of the team.
A March shoot in West Virginia is being planned.
Legendary Pictures is co-financing the movie, which is being executive produced by Brent O'Connor, Thomas Tull, Jeanne Allgood and Scott Mednick.
Mary Viola is overseeing for Thunder Road. Allgood is overseeing for Wonderland, while Lynn Harris is shepherding for the studio.
Strathairn has received plenty of attention this awards season for his starring turn as Edward R. Murrow in "Good Night." The role nabbed him an Academy Award nomination as well as nominations for a BAFA Award, a Golden Globe, an Independent Spirit Award and a SAG Award. He also is on board "Fracture," a New Line thriller with Ryan Gosling and Anthony Hopkins.
Strathairn is repped by ICM and Madeline Ryan at Ryan Entertainment.
