Burns, Littleton promoted in THR reorganization

THR ups Burns, Littleton

staff report
Howard Burns, editor of The Hollywood Reporter, has been promoted to editorial director as part of a larger reorganization of the brand's content operations, The Reporter's publisher Tony Uphoff said Wednesday.

As part of the restructuring, deputy editor Cynthia Littleton has been elevated to editor, Uphoff added.

In an expansion of his duties, Burns assumes oversight for all of The Reporter's editorial operations in print, electronic and face-to-face media. As The Reporter continues to expand into new markets and develop products, Burns will be responsible for integrating assets and leveraging resources across all of its distribution platforms.

"Howard has been the key architect of our sharpened focus on the business of entertainment and has made us the industry leader in coverage in such areas as technology, marketing and finance," Uphoff said. "As the THR network continues to expand, Howard is ideally suited to ensure consistent execution and focus editorially."

Burns, 45, became editor of The Reporter in September 2001 after a four-month run as interim editor. He joined the newspaper as a reporter covering network television in July 1988 after reporting stints at Multichannel News and the Miami News. In his years at The Reporter, Burns has held several positions, including deputy editor, managing editor, news editor and international general manager.

As editor, Littleton will assume day-to-day responsibility for The Reporter's newsgathering operations worldwide, reporting to Burns.

"Cynthia has a great story sense and a deep understanding of the business," Uphoff said. "In her new role, she will no doubt improve all of our editorial products."

Littleton, 36, joined The Reporter in October 1999 as broadcast television editor. She was promoted to deputy editor in October 2001, serving as No. 2 in the newsroom under Burns with responsibility for helping oversee daily news coverage and enterprise reporting as well as having direct oversight of the paper's television and technology departments. For the past six years, she has penned the weekly TV Reporter column profiling top industry personalities and chronicling trends.

Before coming to The Reporter, Littleton spent 2 1/2 years as a television reporter and editor at Daily Variety and Variety. She also worked as a reporter for Broadcasting & Cable and as a correspondent in the Los Angeles bureau of United Press International.

In a related move, Matthew King has been named group vp content and audience at VNU Business Media's Film and Performing Arts group. He will be responsible for driving editorial strategies for the group's titles, which include The Reporter, Back Stage and Amusement Business.

King, 42, takes on added duties for audience development, working directly with group information marketing and e-media managers to ensure that content and subscription business strategies are aligned.

Burns will continue to report to King. Glenn Abel, The Reporter's executive editor, electronic, will now report to Burns.
