All roads don't lead to 'Rome' on home turf

'Rome' weak in Italy

Eric J. Lyman
ROME -- Audience numbers for the television series "Rome" are unexpectedly low in Italy, according to figures released Monday, a week after filming for the second season of the HBO/BBC series got under way at the Cinecitta studios in the Italian capital. According to monitoring company Cinetel, the epic series has drawn a 10% market share. According to the local media, that level is much lower than the 25% share reportedly predicted by state broadcaster RAI when it sold advertising space for the series. According to local media, Italians have balked at British actors portraying Romans, in addition to the editing of violence, nudity and sexual innuendo to make the program fit for a noncable network. Filming on the second season of "Rome" began April 10.
