CW schedules 2 rookies
Just 2 rookies on CW as it uses UPN, WB series
May 17, 2006
The CW network will look like the sum of its parts when the new network -- a successor of the soon-to-be-defunct UPN and WB Network -- launches in the fall with a mix of returning UPN and WB series and only two new offerings: drama "Runaway" and "Girlfriends" spinoff "The Game."
CW's pickups, in addition to "Runaway" and "The Game," include a new drama from "Dawson's Creek" creator Kevin Williamson. The soap "Palm Springs" was given a midseason order Tuesday.
"Veronica Mars" and "One Tree Hill," two of the three WB/UPN dramas that were in danger of cancellation, have been renewed for another season. WB's family drama "Everwood" will not make the switch to CW.
Also making the move to the new net are UPN's comedies "Girlfriends," "Everybody Hates Chris" and "All of Us" and WB's dramas "Smallville," "Supernatural" and "Gilmore Girls," with veteran "7th Heaven" expected to join the group pending the completion of new deals with the cast.
On the unscripted side, UPN's hit "America's Next Top Model" and WB's "Beauty and the Geek," which both are coming back, are rumored for a possible pairing on the schedule, with Wednesday night considered a logical place.
"Chris," brainchild of comedian Chris Rock; "All of Us," from another famous actor, Will Smith; "Girlfriends"; and "The Game" could form a Monday comedy block that has been a staple on UPN.
Also looking compatible together are "Gilmore Girls" and "Veronica Mars," and "7th Heaven" and "Runaway."
"Runaway," from Sony Pictures TV and Darren Star Prods., stars Donnie Wahlberg as a father who goes on the run with his family after he is wrongfully convicted of murder. "The Game," from CBS Paramount Network TV and Grammnet Prods., revolves around women in the lives of professional football players. "Palm Springs," from Lionsgate, is an ensemble soap set in the California desert city.
