DVD sales, rentals
June 1, 2006
Underscoring the growing financial clout of the youth market, a made-for-TV movie aimed at preteen girls handily outsold an $82.6 million boxoffice hit to take the top spot on the DVD sales chart for the week ending May 28.
Buena Vista Home Entertainment's "High School Musical," an original movie that has aired 10 times on the Disney Channel since January, debuted at No. 1 on VideoScan's First Alert DVD sales chart after selling more than 400,000 units its first day in stores, according to the Walt Disney Co.
That made it the fastest-selling TV movie of all time. Industry sources say the sales momentum continued throughout the week and that the feature-length musical had sold 1.2 million units after six days.
"High School" easily beat 20th Century Fox's "Cheaper by the Dozen 2," which arrived on video the same day after a successful boxoffice run. The comedy sequel landed in the second spot on the DVD sales chart, bumping the previous week's topper, "The Ringer," also from Fox, to No. 3.
"Cheaper 2" did, however, finish first on Home Media Retailing's video rental chart for the week, with rental earnings estimated at $7.3 million for its first five days in stores.
"The Ringer" held steady at No. 2 on the rental chart, earning $6.3 million to bring its two-week rental take to $14.3 million, or 40% of its boxoffice gross.
