'Evening' talks
July 12, 2006
Vanessa Redgrave, Claire Danes and Toni Collette are in negotiations to star in "Evening," Focus Features' screen adaptation of Susan Minot's best-selling novel of the same name.
Directed by Oscar nominee Lajos Koltai, the movie centers on 65-year-old cancer patient Ann Grant Lord, who reflects on a weekend in her youth when she met the love of her life, as her two daughters try to come to terms with her impending death while struggling with their own issues.
Redgrave is set to star as Lord, with Danes and Collette respectively co-starring as daughters Ann and Nina.
Minot and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham ("The Hours") adapted the story for the screen. Kahli Small is overseeing "Evening" for Focus. Jeff Sharp and John Hart are producing through their Hart-Sharp Entertainment. Minot and Cunningham will exec produce.
Redgrave next appears in Sony's "Running With Scissors," with Annette Bening, followed by Focus' "Atonement," with Keira Knightley.
Danes next stars opposite Richard Gere in Andrew Lau's "The Flock" and in Matthew Vaughn's "Stardust," opposite Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Sienna Miller.
Collette next stars in the 2006 Sundance Film Festival hits "Little Miss Sunshine," distributed by Fox Searchlight, and the Weinstein Co.'s "The Night Listener."
"Evening" is the first English-language film to be directed by Hungarian filmmaker Koltai. The former cinematographer -- Oscar-nominated in 2001 for lensing "Malena" -- most recently directed "Fateless," a historical drama based on Nobel laureate Imre Kertesz's novel about Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust. "Fateless" was Hungary's submission to this year's Academy Awards.
Redgrave is repped by CAA, Danes is repped by ICM and managed by Michael Aglion, and Collette is repped by Endeavor.
