Landmark indie complex bound for L.A.
Multiplex opening
July 14, 2006
NEW YORK -- The largest independent film multiplex in the country is set to open in June in Los Angeles.
Landmark Film Center at Westside Pavilion, operated by Landmark Theatres, will feature 12 auditoriums in the three-story venue dedicated to independent films. Landmark is in preliminary talks with film industry guilds, tech companies and local film schools to educate and train film students and screen works from emerging artists. Film panels and seminars also are planned.
"We're seeing a surge in popularity for independent film as seen at this year's Oscars," Landmark and Magnolia Pictures CEO Bill Banowsky said. "These films tend to open in New York and Los Angeles, but the grosses are usually higher in New York. We think that's more a function of not having as good or accessible a facility, and we hope to provide that here."
All auditoriums in the Westside Pavilion mall complex will be outfitted with stadium seating and the latest in film and digital technology. The first floor will feature new upscale restaurants, and the top floors will house a lounge and wine bar.
