Lionsgate has acquired worldwide rights to "Fuera Del Cielo" (Beyond the Sky), the feature film debut of Mexican director Javier Patron Fox. The urban crime drama marks the second Spanish-language feature the company has acquired under its agreement with Panamax Films.
"The spotlight is very much on Mexico right now as an exciting place for discovering interesting new talent, and Fox's 'Fuera Del Cielo' is a stunning debut feature from a very gifted director that will appeal to modern audiences in both the U.S. and internationally," Lionsgate International president Nick Meyer said.
Set in Mexico City, the film was written by Guillermo Rio and Vicente Lenero. It recently debuted at the Guadalajara Film Festival in Mexico, where Fox won the director award. "Cielo" will be released Dec. 29 in Mexico.
Lionsgate acquired the Spanish-language feature "La Mujer De Mi Hermano" from Mexico as part of its multiyear agreement with Panamax to develop and produce Spanish/Latino features for the North American and worldwide markets. The film was the leading R-rated film last year in Mexico, where it grossed an estimated $3.5 million. It was No. 1 at the boxoffice in Venezuela, Colombia and Peru.
