'Ugly Betty' delivers beautifully for ABC

'Ugly Betty' scores

NEW YORK -- "Ugly Betty" delivered pretty ratings for ABC Thursday night, with sampling of the comedy-drama boosting it past "Survivor" in its second half hour.

"CSI" came back a bit higher at 9 p.m., winning by a nose over "Grey's Anatomy" in viewership although "Grey's remained dominant in the demo. But ABC's halo didn't last until 10 p.m., with "Six Degrees" faltering while "ER" remained strong and "Shark" won the hour in viewership. For the night, CBS won in total viewers but was edged out by ABC in the demo; NBC was a distant third.

"Ugly Betty" started off a million viewers behind "Survivor: Cook Islands" at 8 p.m. but turned it up in the second half hour as it overtook the CBS reality show in viewership although not in the demo. "Ugly Betty" delivered 16.1 million viewers and a 4.9 rating/14 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates released Friday by Nielsen Media Research. "Survivor" brought in 16.6 million viewers and a 5.8/16 to win the night in both measures, although "Ugly Betty" reached 17.7 million viewers at 8:30 p.m. to "Survivor"'s 17.5 million.

That led into 9 p.m., where "CSI" (23.5 million, 7.9/19) gained ground after last week's upset to win the hour in viewership. But "Grey's" (23.3 million, 9.4/22) remained ahead in the demo.

One of Thursday's biggest stories remained so last night, with 13-year-old "ER" (14.3 million, 6.1/16) winning in the demo for a second week after its premiere-week win. CBS's "Shark" (14.7 million, 4.2/11) circled the hour around last week's level although with "ER" down in viewership the James Woods legal drama won the hour in total viewers. ABC's "Six Degrees" (10.8 million, 4.4/12) dropped from last week's premiere of 12.6 million and 5.4/14.

Elsewhere on NBC were "My Name is Earl" (8.2 million, 3.4/10) and "The Office" (7.7 million, 3.7/10), both down from last week's premiere. "Deal or No Deal" (9.3 million, 3.2/8) came in third place in the tough 9 p.m. hour, down from the 10.3 million and 3.6/9 when it aired in the same time period last week.

Fox wasn't a factor at all, with a new "Til Death" and then a repeat at 8 p.m. combining for 5.6 million viewers and a 2.4/7 just ahead of The CW's premiere of "Smallville" (5 million, 2.2/6). the penultimate episode of "Celebrity Duets" (4 million, 1.5/4) did even worse, beaten in the adults 18-49 demo by the premiere of The CW's "Supernatural" (3.8 million, 1.6/4).

Nightly averages: ABC (16.7 million, 6.2/15); CBS (18.3 million, 6.0/16); NBC (10.5 million, 4.3/11); Fox (4.8 million, 1.9/5); and The CW (4.4 million, 1.9/5).
