'Heaven' spins top Golden Satellite
ACE to honor Kennedy
Jan 13, 2003
Filmmaker Todd Haynes and Focus Features' "Far From Heaven" has been tapped as the year's best film by the International Press Academy at its 7th Annual Golden Satellite Awards. The awards, and an homage to film producer Robert Evans, were to take place Sunday night at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
A 1950s-set drama, "Heaven" pays homage to the vintage features of Douglas Sirk. The film was the toast of both coasts Sunday night as the New York Film Critics Circle was to give "Heaven" its top award at its annual dinner, held at Manhattan's Noche. Haynes also won a best director award at the Golden Satellites.
For television, CBS' "CSI" was written up as the year's best drama, according to the IPA. Fox's "The Bernie Mac Show" laughed its way to best comedy or musical series, while that show's lead, Bernie Mac, won for best comedic actor. Debra Messing (NBC's "Will & Grace") was named best actress in a comedy or musical series.
In the best feature comedy or musical category, IFC Films' indie sensation "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" said "I do" to a Golden Satellite win, while Pedro Almodovar's "Talk to Her," from Sony Pictures Classics, translated to best foreign film.
A notable film win, in the best actress in a drama category, came when Diane Lane was rewarded for her role in Adrian Lyne's 20th Century Fox/Regency Enterprises release "Unfaithful." Lane also won an NYFCC honor Sunday in what has been an impressive awards run to date.
Two Miramax releases emerged victorious in the Golden Satellites' best actor in a drama feature category: Daniel Day-Lewis for his role as a notorious 19th century crime lord in Miramax Films' "Gangs of New York" tied with Michael Caine for his performance in Philip Noyce's "The Quiet American."
Best actress in a comedy or musical was "Kissing Jessica Stein's" Jennifer Westfeldt, while that category's best actor was Kieran Culkin ("Igby Goes Down").
Steven Spielberg's mega-miniseries "Taken," from the Sci Fi Channel, was beamed up to accept a best miniseries award, and TNT's William H. Macy-starring "Door to Door" ordered up a best picture made-for-television win.
Best actress in a drama series went to C.C.H. Pounder (FX's "The Shield"), and best dramatic actor was Kiefer Sutherland (Fox's "24.")
