'Americano' trio take indie by horns
'Americano' in Spain
July 15, 2003
Joshua Jackson, Dennis Hopper and Leonor Varela topline the indie feature "Americano" from writer-director Kevin Noland. Production is under way in Pamplona, Spain. Shooting also will segue to various small villages throughout Spain's region of Navarra and the Pyrenees mountains with Phil Barantini, Timm Sharp and Ruthanna Hopper rounding out the cast. The film is set against the backdrop of the country's centuries-old Fiesta de San Fermin, better known as the running of the bulls at Pamplona. The shooting of the feature coincides with the nine-day festival, incorporating actual footage of the fiesta's daily bull runs and nightly celebrations. "Americano" centers around Chris McKinley (Jackson), a recent college graduate backpacking through Europe who savors his last three days of freedom before boarding the career fast track back in the United States. In Pamplona with two friends (Sharp and Ruthanna Hopper), Chris meets an Australian thrill-seeker (Barantini), a quintessential Spanish beauty (Varela) and an enigmatic provocateur (Dennis Hopper), all of whom encourage him to rethink his life. As the minutes and seconds until his departure tick away, Chris struggles with an age-old question: Should he follow the beaten path or risk it all on the road less traveled? Mark Edward Roberts, Ruthanna Hopper, Clark McCutchen, Nick Satriano and Maricel Pagulayan are producing the project. Michael Bircumshaw is the executive producer.
