It's no contest: 'Idol' Aiken a big winner in chart debut

"American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken's RCA Records debut "Measure of a Man" makes a big splash on the chart, bowing at No. 1 on 612,850 units sold. Aiken's first-week sales outperformed the first-season "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson's "Thankful," which debuted at No. 1 in April on about 297,000 copies scanned (HR 4/24).
Aiken pushes last week's No. 1, Ludacris' "Chicken-n-Beer" (Def Jam), to No. 2 on 193,700 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures obtained from industry sources for the week ending Oct. 19.
Two other albums debut in the top 10: R&B group Jagged Edge's "Hard" (Columbia) enters at No. 3 on 177,725 copies sold, and Barbra Streisand's "The Movie Album" bows at No. 5 on 162,050 units scanned, marking Streisand's 53rd charting album of her 40-year career.
Outkast's two-disc release "Speakerboxxx/ The Love Below" (Arista) slips two spots to No. 4 on 167,825 units sold, while labelmate Dido's "Life for Rent" falls two notches to No. 6, adding 101,475 copies.
RCA's latest Elvis Presley compilation "Elvis: 2nd to None" drops four notches to No. 7 on 81,625 units sold.
Sting's "Sacred Love" (A&M) drops two positions to No. 8 on 77,600 copies scanned in its third week.
Teen star Hilary Duff's sales remain strong as "Metamorphosis," her debut album for Buena Vista/Hollywood Records, holds at No. 9 on 74,250 units sold, while Dave Matthews' solo debut "Some Devil" slips five notches to No. 10 on 73,550 copies scanned.
Other notable debuts include Jonny Lang's "Long Time Coming" (No. 17), Mariah Carey's "Remixes" (No. 26) and "The Essential Simon & Garfunkel" (No. 27).
