Latifah takes the wheel for 'Truck' redo

Latifah is 'Truck'-in

Queen Latifah is driving a remake of "Truck Turner" to the big screen for MGM.

The Oscar-nominated actress -- who is onscreen in the No. 1 film, MGM's "Barbershop 2" -- is producing the remake, which Chris Frisina has just been hired to write for the studio and Queen Latifah's production company Flavor Unit Films.

The original 1974 film, directed by Jonathan Kaplan, found Isaac Hayes in the title role starring as a bounty hunter hired to kill a man named Gator. Once the job is done, Gator's girlfriend puts a hit out on Truck, who is then forced to elude the hit and escape the nasty gang. Yaphet Kotto, Paul Harris, Annazette Chase and Sam Lewis also star.

Frisina will adapt and update the MGM title. Queen Latifah and her Flavor Unit partner Shakim Compere will produce. It's unclear whether Queen Latifah will take a role in the film, but sources said that if all the pieces come together, she would likely star in the project.

"Truck Turner" is one of several remakes that the singer-actress-performer is eyeing out of MGM's library. At the studio, the project is being shepherded by executive vp Elizabeth Cantillon and creative executive Pete Chiarelli.

Frisina is repped by Chris Smith at Metropolitan Talent Agency, Anonymous Content's Shawn Hopkins and attorney Alex Kohner at Barnes, Morris, Klein, Mark, Yorn, Barnes & Levine.

With "Barbershop 2," Queen Latifah has appeared in three back-to-back films that opened at No. 1, after "Scary Movie 3" and "Bringing Down the House." She is repped by WMA.
