'American Idol' on the Charts: Candice Glover, Kree Harrison Make Their Billboard Debuts
"I Am Beautiful" and "All Cried Out" make season 12's top two the 69th and 70th Idols to chart. Plus: Pia Toscano is on a Top 20 hit? Which Idol’s grandmother is charting? And Phillip Phillips' "Home" completes a tour of duty.
IDOLS TURN 70: One week after the season 12 finale of American Idol, the top two finalists can pick up Billboard magazine on the newsstands this weekend and see their names in print on multiple charts, something they couldn’t have imagined a year ago today. Candice Glover, the newly crowned American Idol, debuts on eight different charts with her coronation song, “I Am Beautiful.” Kree Harrison, the 12th runner-up in the series’ history, debuts on three charts with her first single, “All Cried Out.”
Glover and Harrison are the 69th and 70th Idols to appear on the Billboard charts, a feat that many artists strive to achieve and view as an important milestone in their careers. Glover and Harrison’s simultaneous debuts keep the record intact that every winner and every runner-up has made the leap from the TV screen to the Billboard charts.
Glover’s “I Am Beautiful” is already a top five hit in its first week on the charts, entering the R&B Digital Songs tally at No. 5. The song is also No. 6 on Heatseekers Songs, No. 8 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs, No. 33 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, No. 39 on Hot Digital Songs, No. 40 on Hot Digital Tracks and No. 93 on the Hot 100.
Harrison’s “All Cried Out” debuts at No. 22 on both Country Digital Songs and Heatseekers Songs, and is a new entry at No. 34 on Hot Country Songs.
Glover is one of six Idol winners who have titles appearing on the Billboard charts this week. The other five: Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood, Scotty McCreery and Phillip Phillips.
A YEAR AT ‘HOME’: Light the candles on the birthday cake for Phillip Phillips’ “Home,” which spends its 52nd week on the Billboard charts. “Home” debuted at No. 10 on the Hot 100 for the week ending June 9, 2012. At the end of its first year on the charts, “Home” is not only still a current hit, it is still registering in the top 10. The song is down 5-6 on the Adult Contemporary chart, where it occupied the No. 1 spot for 12 consecutive weeks.
CATCHING UP: The next No. 1 song on the Adult Contemporary chart could be Kelly Clarkson’s “Catch My Breath.” The single moves up one rung to No. 2 this week, right behind the Lumineers’ “Ho Hey.”
“Catch” is already Clarkson’s third-biggest hit in her almost 11 years on the AC charts. “Breakaway” is her biggest AC hit, with a 21-week reign at No. 1 in 2005. “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” remained in the top spot for eight weeks in 2012.
“Catch” will either be Clarkson’s third AC chart-topper or her first to peak at No. 2. Three of her singles peaked at No. 3 on AC: Because of You” in 2006, “Already Gone” in 2010 and “Don’t You Wanna Stay” with Jason Aldean in 2011.
GENERATIONS: Season five’s Paris Bennett has a blood relative on the Billboard charts this week. Her grandmother, Ann Nesby, is No. 30 on the Adult R&B chart with “Through With You.” Nesby has previously charted both on her own and as a member of Sounds of Blackness and her career precedes her granddaughter’s time on Idol.
DANCING WITH THE IDOLS: No, this isn’t about Kellie Pickler’s win on the ABC series Monday night, though congratulations are in order for the season five Idol finalist.
This is about two Idols breaking into the top 10 of the Hot Dance Club Play chart this week. Kelly Clarkson’s “People Like Us” jumps 12-8 to become her sixth top 10 hit on this list. More notable, it’s her fifth consecutive top 10 dance hit, a run that began with “My Life Would Suck Without You” in April 2009. If “People Like Us” makes it to the top of the chart, it will be Clarkson’s fourth No. 1 on the dance tally.
Also moving into the top 10 this week is season three’s Leah LaBelle with “Lolita,” up 14-10. This is LaBelle’s second Billboard top 10; her “Sexify” peaked at No. 3 on the Bubbling Under Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in May 2012. Two months later, “Sexify” went to No. 89 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
PIA TOSCANA TEAMS WITH 'X FACTOR' STAR?: The X Factor judge Demi Lovato is No. 14 on the Hot 100 with “Heart Attack,” a song that peaked at No. 10 in April.
If you listen carefully, you can hear an Idol’s vocals on the track. The song was previously recorded by Pia Toscano and intended for her debut album. But Interscope abandoned the project, so the album was never released and the song went to Lovato, who recorded her vocals over the original track.
FROM THE JUDGES’ TABLE: Two season 12 judges have songs doing well on the Billboard charts. Mariah Carey’s “#Beautiful” climbs 24-20 on the Hot 100 and makes the greatest gain in airplay of any song on the survey. On Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, the single breaks into the top five with a hike of 7-5. Meanwhile, Keith Urban’s latest, “Little Bit of Everything,” is the highest new entry of the week on Country Digital Songs, with a debut at No. 12. On Hot Country Songs, the single opens at No. 24.
BITS AND PIECES: Colton Dixon’s A Messenger rebounds 13-11 on Top Christian Albums… Phillip Phillips’ “Gone, Gone, Gone” spends a third week at No. 1 on the Triple A Audience chart and rises 60-57 on the Hot 100… Carrie Underwood’s “See You Again” moves up 86-81 on the Hot 100 and jumps 22-19 on Country Airplay… Scotty McCreery’s “See You Tonight” also advances on the Country Airplay chart, up 50-44.
