'American Idol' on the Charts: Jake Bugg Slams Show But Sees Major Sales Boost
The British newcomer calls "Idol" a "dream smasher," but his performance results in a 551 percent sales increase. Also: Jena Irene helps Coldplay return to the Rock Digital Songs tally.
UNGRACIOUS: You don’t have to dig very deep to find the irony when it comes to Jake Bugg’s guest appearance on last week’s American Idol results show. Largely unknown in the United States, Bugg was asked to be the first new artist featured on the Fox series this season. Born in Clifton, Nottingham, England, it’s unlikely Bugg would be unaware of the format of Idol and shows like The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. Yet, he seemed shocked that someone would be going home on a results show of a TV talent competition series, and told BBC Newsbeat that Idol was “cruel” and a “dream smasher.”
Bugg is entitled to his opinion, of course, even if it’s not very gracious after the kind invitation to be a guest on Idol -- a guest who subsequently benefits tremendously from his appearance on the show. Just 19 when he sang “Me and You” on Idol (he celebrated his 20th birthday the next day), Bugg received a pleasant natal day surprise this week when his album Shangri La showed up on five Billboard charts. This is a result of a 551 percent sales increase over the previous week, according to Billboard’s Gary Trust.
Bugg’s sophomore set, issuled in 2013, re-enters The Billboard 200 at No. 94. It previously debuted and peaked at No. 46 during its one-week stay on this chart. Shangri La re-entered Top Folk Albums at No. 2, Top Alternative Albums at No. 13, Top Rock Albums at No. 19 and Top Current Albums at No. 83.
Bugg’s self-titled debut, a 2012 release, also re-enters the charts, at No. 200 on The Billboard 200, No. 7 on Top Folk Albums and No. 45 on Top Rock Albums.
SONG SELECTION: On last week’s top 13 performance show, 17-year-old Jena Irene caused a little commotion among the judges when she sang Coldplay’s 2002 song, “The Scientist.” Maybe that kerfuffle helped sell a few copies of the original, as the Coldplay version re-enters Rock Digital Songs at No. 31.
“The Scientist” isn’t the only Coldplay song to return to the charts this week. At first glance, it might seem like “Fix It” also benefits from an Idol performance, as Majesty Rose ended the top 12 performance show with her rendition. But this week’s Hot Singles Sales survey was compiled before the Wednesday show aired. “Fix You” re-enters at No. 22; stay tuned for next week’s charts to see if Rose’s performance impacts sales for Coldplay.
‘TONIGHT’ GOES ON FOREVER: It seems like every week we report on improved chart fortunes for Scotty McCreery’s current single, “See You Tonight,” and this week is no exception. The song reaches new peak positions on the Hot 100 (54-52), Radio Songs (36-32), Country Streaming Songs (18-13) and Country Airplay (9-8). On Hot Country Songs, the track returns to the top 10, up 12-10.
The parent album, which shares its title with the single, rebounds 19-16 on Top Country Albums.
BITS AND PIECES: Colton Dixon’s A Messenger reaches the one-year mark on Top Christian Albums. In its 52nd week, the set springs 17-11. Dixon’s label-mate, Mandisa, also enjoys a reversal of fortune, as her album Overcomer moves back up, 13-12… Jennifer Hudson’s “I Can’t Describe (The Way I Feel)” holds at No. 8 on Adult R&B…Guy Sebastian from Australian Idol makes a nice jump on the Hot Dance Club Play chart with his new single, “Like a Drum.” It’s up 44-33… Daughtry’s “Waiting for Superman” departs the Adult Top 40 chart, only to show up on Adult Top 40 Recurrents, where it debuts at No. 4. The album Baptized is up 24-23 on Top Rock Albums… Lee DeWyze’s current single, “Fight,” reaches a new peak position on Adult Top 40, climbing 40-37… Phillip Phillips’ “Gone, Gone, Gone” is No. 1 for the third week on Adult Contemporary Recurrents… Keith Urban’s “Cop Car” travels 10-8 on Hot Country Songs, holds at No. 3 on Country Digital Songs and breaks into the top 10 of Country Streaming Songs, with an improvement of 11-10.
