'American Idol' on the Charts: Lauren Alaina Continues Billboard Streak With 'Barefoot and Buckwild'
Plus: Kelly Clarkson's nuptial-themed "Tie It Up" walks down the aisle.
LAUREN, YEAR THREE: After placing second on season 10 of American Idol, Lauren Alaina debuted on the Billboard country singles chart the week of June 11, 2011. Her debut single, “Like My Mother Does,” peaked at No 36 on Hot Country Songs. The follow-up, “Georgia Peaches,” is her biggest hit to date, which came in at No. 28. In the summer of 2012, she peaked at No. 37 with “Eighteen Inches,” a song co-written by Carrie Underwood.
Alaina expands her chart run into 2013 with the debut of her new single on the airplay-based Country Detections chart. “Barefoot and Buckwild,” which she performed on Idol on May 9 during the top-three results show for season 12, is a new entry at No. 60. It is the first release from her forthcoming sophomore album.
WEDDING BELLS: Kelly Clarkson will soon be married to fiancée Brandon Blackstock, so she must be in a wedding bells-mood, because that’s the theme of her nuptially-oriented brand-new single, “Tie It Up.” Country radio has already found the track engaging, giving it enough spins to debut at No. 52 on the Country Airplay chart.
“Tie It Up” isn’t the only Clarkson song on the Billboard charts this week. “Catch My Breath” holds at No. 5 on Adult Contemporary and “People Like Us” rises from eight to seven on Adult Top 40.
"OVER"-JOYED: Mandisa’s latest single continues to perform well. In its fourth week on the Christian Songs chart, “Overcomer” jumps from 24 to 19. Meanwhile, the track debuts on the Christian Adult Contemporary chart at No. 21. On the Christian Digital Songs chart, Mandisa’s long-lasting “Good Morning,” recorded with tobyMac, moves back up the chart, 27 to 26, in its 77th week. That’s just one week shy of a year-and-a-half on this chart.
WHERE HAS HE "GONE"?: While fans are wondering what the third single from Phillip Phillips’ debut album will be, the second track to be released, “Gone, Gone, Gone,” continues to find new territory to conquer. This week, the song debuts on the Mainstream Top 40 chart at No. 38. Over on the Adult Top 40 survey, “Gone” rises one spot, from No. 4 to No. 3. On the Hot 100, the song breaks into the top 40 with a move of 43 to 36. And on Hot 100 Singles Airplay, “Gone” breaks into the top 30, with a nice seven-spot hike of 35 to 28.
As well as “Gone” is performing, its predecessor is still on the charts, as well. On Rock Digital Songs, where “Home” is a former No. 1, the song rebounds 15- to 13 in its 57th week on the chart.
With both “Home” and “Gone, Gone, Gone” still showing strength, it’s no surprise that the parent album, The World From the Side of the Moon, is moving back up Top Rock Albums, lifting four spots, from 26 to 22.
FANTASIA, KELLY, KELLY, FANTASIA: On the R&B Songs chart, Fantasia’s current single, “Without Me,” featuring Kelly Rowland and Missy Elliott, reaches a new peak position as it advances from No. 13 to No. 12. Just a couple of notches below, Rowland’s own “Dirty Laundry” is up one spot, 15 to 14, switching places with Fantasia’s “Lose to Win,” which slides to No. 15.
“Lose to Win” might be Fantasia’s previous single, but it’s still moving up on Adult R&B, where it inches up a slot, from four to three, its highest position to date on this tally. “Without Me” is moving up here, too, from 31 to 29.
Just as Phillip Phillips’ album is benefiting from two active singles, Fantasia’s Side Effects of You rebounds on The Billboard 200 with a eight-spot climb, from No. 62 to No. 54.
BITS AND PIECES: Underwood’s “See You Again” will have to wait another week to break into the top 10 of the Country Airplay chart. The single stands pat at No. 11 ... On that same chart, Scotty McCreery’s “See You Tonight” is down a spot to No. 38, but earns a bullet for increased airplay over last week ... Kellie Pickler’s “Someone Somewhere Tonight” is in the same situation, slipping to No. 55, but collecting that backward bullet for airplay gain.
