'American Idol' On The Charts: 'Voice' Finalist Takes the 'Wheel,' Boosts Carrie Underwood
Danielle Bradbery debuts on Christian Digital Songs, sending the original version of "Jesus, Take the Wheel" even higher. Also: Jessica Sanchez releases her first album and Kelly Clarkson has a "People" mover.
'THE VOICE' BOOSTS AN IDOL: Here’s a first: a performance on The Voice has sent an American Idol’s single hurtling up the charts. Danielle Bradbery sang “Jesus, Take the Wheel” on the NBC talent competition series and now finds her own version of Carrie Underwood’s first post-Idol hit debuting on Top Christian Songs at No. 13.
But Bradbery’s remake is not the highest ranking version of the song on that chart. Her performance on The Voice has had an even more powerful effect on Underwood’s original, which soars 23-5.
This is not the first time a contestant on a TV series has sung “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” with a resulting rebound for Underwood’s version. But the last time it happened, it was on American Idol. Season 11’s Hollie Cavanagh performed the song in 2012 and sent Underwood’s version to No. 1 on the Christian Digital Songs chart.
The Underwood track is in its 173rd week on this chart, and its current ranking at No. 5 is its highest position since it topped the list the week of April 14, 2012.
‘MUSIC’ OF HER LIFE: Season 11 runner-up Jessica Sanchez debuts at No. 26 on The Billboard 200 with her first post-Idol album, Me You and the Music.
The album makes its bow just one week shy of the one-year anniversary of last season’s finale, which pitted Sanchez against Phillip Phillips. And it’s a reminder that whoever wins season 12 of American Idol, Candice Glover and Kree Harrison will both see their names on the Billboard charts before very long.
UP WITH ‘PEOPLE’: Kelly Clarkson’s new single, “People Like Us,” has achieved top 10 status on one Billboard chart. The song debuts at No. 7 on Hot Dance Singles Sales, while also moving up 19-15 on Hot Dance Club Play.
“People Like Us” is also climbing on the Adult Top 40 survey, where it jumps 22-19.
BITS AND PIECES: Colton Dixon’s A Messenger rebounds on Top Christian Albums, rising 9-7… Fantasia’s Side Effects of You is still in the top five of the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, falling 2-4, while her single “Lose to Win” reaches a new peak position on Adult R&B, up 4-3… Carrie Underwood has three titles in the top 30 of the Country Digital Songs chart. Her latest single, “See You Again,” re-enters at No. 21. “Blown Away” is No 26 and “Two Black Cadillacs” is No. 30. “See You Again” makes its Hot 100 debut this week, bowing at No. 90… Leah LaBelle’s “Lolita” advances 18-16 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart… Phillip Phillips’ “Gone, Gone, Gone” reclaims the No. 1 spot on the Triple A Audience chart and rises 9-8 on Adult Top 40… Kelly Clarkson’s “Catch My Breath” moves up to a new peak position on Adult Contemporary, with a climb of 4-3.
