'American Idol' Results: James Durbin Sent Home in Elimination-Night Shocker
Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart remain after Thursday's episode.
In American Idol's biggest shocker since Pia Toscano was eliminated five weeks ago, rocker James Durbin was sent packing on the elimination episode Thursday night.
Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart remain and make up season 10's top three contestants.
James, who performed "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Love Potion No. 9" under Lady Gaga's tutelage on Wednesday night's episode, appeared stunned when host Ryan Seacrest revealed that Scotty was safe and that the rocker was eliminated. After watching a retrospective of his Idol run, James proclaimed, "I did so much stuff that has never been done of this show before," while Jennifer Lopez was shown crying at the judges table.
The sad news for Durbin fans arrived after Lauren and Haley were announced to be safe, marking the fifth straight week in which a male singer was booted from the competition.
James bid farewell with a heartfelt performance of Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed," in which he attacked the high notes one last time on the Idol stage.
Aside from James' swan song, Idol was jam-packed with performances: Gaga, who helped the "Idol" contestants perfect their craft on Wednesday's episode, was shown singing her "Born This Way" ballad "You and I" via pre-taped concert footage. Enrique Iglesias played new single "Dirty Dancer" and his monster hit "I Like It" in-house, using a slew of green laser lights and inflatable white balls to captivate the crowd.
Later, previous American Idol winner Jordin Sparks returned to the Idol stage -- first in a shiny silver coat and then in a sleek black dress -- to perform her empowering new single, "I Am Woman." And judge Steven Tyler premiered the music video for new solo single "(It) Feels So Good," which featured the rocker hanging out with various animals, including an elephant, hawk and parrot.
Scotty, Haley and Lauren will try to land a spot in the finals when Idol returns Wednesday night. For the first time since there were 13 contestants left, there are more female singers still standing than male singers.
