'American Idol': Top 5's Performance Night Songs Revealed
The remaining finalists will tackle songs by The Zombies, The Bee Gees, Leona Lewis and two Tina Turner classics.
American Idol musical director Ray Chew has leaked the song list for Wednesday's British-themed performance night, complete with music from the '60s thrown in for good measure.
In additional Idol news, song duets and trios have returned, no doubt in an effort to stretch the show to two hours -- remember, only five finalists remain.
As for Brit-pop, songs by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones are noticeably absent (darn, we wanted to see if anyone else would dare try and top Season-nine alum Siobhan Magnus’ delightfully captivating rendition of “Paint it Black”), but there are some retreads in the list with which fans of the show may be familiar. For example, The Zombies' haunting "Time of the Season" (famously beat-boxed by season-six runner-up Blake Lewis), will be tackled, as will the Bee Gees' “To Love Somebody” (the list of contestants performing that one is long and includes Jordin Sparks, Josh Gracin and Clay Aiken). Sidenote: Will Hollie Cavanagh, the only true Brit in the competition, dare do another Dusty Springfield song in the same season, or will she attempt to slay a big dragon with X-Factor winner Leona Lewis' massive hit, "Bleeding Love"?
As for the 1960s, just who will tempt fate and cover Tina Turner’s “River Deep Mountain High” after that song did in season 10's Pia Toscano? Our guess is Jessica Sanchez, but we could be wrong -- Joshua Ledet might do an emotional, over-the-top version of this. He just can’t resist a choir. But can anyone top Carrie Underwood’s version of Ike and Turner’s “Proud Mary"? Who won’t be "Too Proud to Beg" (we’re looking at you, Ledet), and who just got a “Letter” (paging Phillip Phillips)? Will Skylar Laine rock out to some Creedence Clearwater Revival?
Personally, the British theme could have been slightly more, shall we say, current? Couldn’t you just picture Phillips alone with his guitar hypnotizing us with Oasis and “Wonderwall”? We digress.
Here is the full list:
The Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody”
The Zombies’ “Time of the Season”
Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love”
Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful”
Dusty Springfield’s “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”
The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg”
The Box Tops’ “The Letter”
Ike and Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary”
Creedence Clearwater Revival “Fortunate Son”
Tina Turner “River Deep, Mountain High”
Jackie Wilson’s “Higher and Higher”
The Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling”
Time to speculate, Idol Worshippers! Who will do what?
