'American Idol's' Broadway Takeover (Video)
Season four runner-up Bo Bice is the latest grad of the Fox show to head to the Great White Way. THR looks at eight other Idols who gave musical theater a try.
Season four of American Idol has turned out to be a breeding ground for future musical theater stars as runner-up Bo Bice, who has been tapped for a role in the Broadway revival of the 1982 musical, Pump Boys and Dinettes, joins a slew of fellow finalists on the Great White Way.
Among them: Broadway regular Constantine Maroulis, now a seasoned stage vet with roles in Rent, The Wedding Singer, Rock of Ages and the current revival of Jeckyl and Hyde. Season four winner Carrie Underwood will star as Maria Von Trapp in the NBC production of The Sound of Music next year. Anthony Fedorov has starred in various musical productions both Off Broadway and beyond, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Hairspray, Rent, Cinderella, and, most recently, The Sound of Music. Although not as active in theater, Anwar Robinson starred in a 2008 production of Godspell in Syracuse.
Other former contestants igniting Broadway, London, and regional theater stages include Jordin Sparks, Vonzell Solomon, Ruben Studdard, Ace Young, Diana DeGarmo, Todrick Hall, Fantasia Barrino, Clay Aiken, Taylor Hicks, Justin Guarini, Syesha Mercado, Scott Savol, and Adam Lambert, who appeared in a production of Wicked during his pre-Idol days.
Pump Boys and Dinettes is set in a North Carolina diner, and the entire cast, including Bice, will play their own instruments. Directed by John Doyle, the play will debut March 19 at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

Bice is already preparing for the role. Early Tuesday morning, he tweeted season five champion and current Grammy nominee, Taylor Hicks -- who appears on the Jimmy Fallon album, Blow Your Pants Off, making him eligible in the best comedy album category -- for advice.
"I'll have to steal a few Broadway tips from you," Bice tweeted.
Watch a few clips of other Idols in action:
Taylor Hicks was "angelic" in his role as Teen Angel in Grease:
Speaking of season five, we know the Marilyn show was never on Broadway, but we're among the fans who would pay to see Katharine McPhee in the role. Listen to her belt out "Don't Forget Me" from the Smash finale:
American Idol's golden couple, Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo, fell in love while co-starring in a revival of Hair. Here are the lovebirds performing "Aquarius" with Kelly Ripa:
Constantine Maroulis appeared in so many stage productions, it's hard to pick just one performance, but we settled on this rendition of "I Wanna Rock" from Rock of Ages:
Here's a pre-Idol Adam Lambert in Wicked:
Behold, Fantasia at the Tony Awards performing "I'm Here" from The Color Purple:
Season one' Tamyra Gray starred in "Bombay Dreams" and performed it in the Macy's Parade:
Last, but not least, Clay Aiken was a scream as Sir Robin in Spamalot:
