It marks the first time a contestant has ever performed a song from the iconic 90s grunge band.
A week after undergoing blood transfusions to treat ulcerative colitis, American Idol hopeful Casey Abrams will return to the show Wednesday to perform Nirvava’s 1991 grunge anthem “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”Wednesday’s show calls for contestants to choose a tune from their birth year. Thia Megia, 16, is set to belt out 1995′s “Colors of the Wind” from the Disney toon Pocahontas. Rumor has it, judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler might take the stage too – but executive producer Nigel Lythgoe played coy Wednesday morning while chatting on Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS-FM radio show. “They might perform,” he teased. “They might even perform before the finale.” As for rumors that an Aerosmith reunion could happen on the Idol stage, Lythgoe said, “Oh, are they? I know that we have some fantastic guests for the finale. People are calling us now! The show has made such an impact that great stars are calling us wanting to be on the shows finale!”
