"You've got to plan and budget," says Davis, who has been a business manager for nine years, "as opposed to just being super-restrictive or, on the other side, completely crazy."

Other than the obvious illegality (cultivation and sale are felonies if not for personal medical use or a nonprofit), "there are tax consequences," says Davis. "You can't deduct any of your expenses. It's not a great business model."
