In the early 90s , Batman: The Animated series writer Paul Dini was home sick watching Days of Their lives when Arleen Sorkin appeared on the show in a harlequin outfit. Dini was so inspired, he got up and created Harley Quinn, a character who could be both the Joker’s sidekick and girlfriend.

Since her inception and first appearance, Harley Quinn has taken the comic book community by storm, becoming a staple of Batman’s mythology and cosplayers at comic conventions.

Harley will be coming to the big screen for the first time in DC Film's Suicide Squad (2016). She has will played by Australian actress Margot Robbie.

As of now nine actress have played Harley. Here's is a look back at all of them.

  • Arleen Sorkin

What Mel Blanc is to Bugs Bunny, Arleen Sorkin is to Harley Quinn. She is the voice all other actresses pay homage to when they step up to swing the mallet. Sorkin voiced Harley through Batman: The Animated Series (1992) to Justice League (2001). She also voiced Harley in the first Batman Arkham game, Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009). Without Arleen Sorkin there would be no Harley Quinn as we know her today.

  • Mia Sara

    Waren Bros.

The first live screen appearance of Harley was by Mia Sara in TV's Birds of Prey (2002). Sara played a Harley who had returned to her job as psychiatrist and secretly use that position to manipulate herself into becoming the new crime lord in New Gotham City. Sara never appeared in the traditional Harley Quinn outfit during the series.

  • Hynden Walch

Hynden Walch stepped up to voice Harley Quinn after Arlin in The Batman (2004)and Batman: Assault on Arkham (2014). The Batman version of  Quinn was a  romance talk show host who turn to mega fan the Joker after Bruce Wayne shut Harley down on her show. The typical story of Joker manipulating Harley Quinzel is explored in this animated outing. In Assault on Arkham, Walch voices a Harley who's a part of the suicide squad and must retrieve a USB drive in Riddler’s cane from the mental hospital.

  • Tara Strong

If Sorkin is the first person people think about when they hear Harley Quinn, Tara Strong is a quick second. Strong has appear as Harley more times than any other actress, most notably for the Arkham video games. She has so fallen in love with the character, Strong cosplayed as Harley in 2016 at San Diego Comic-Con.

  • Grey Delisle

With an A-B-B-C-A mallet combo, Grey Delisle made a mark as Harley in Lego: Batman (2009), where she was armed with a mallet and handgun.  A special feature of this Harley, like all female villains in Lego Batman, was she able to open doors.

  • Laura Bailey

Bailey took over the role of Harley from Grey Delisle  four years latter in the sequel to Lego BatmanLego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes. Harley's special move in the game is to spin around and do damage with her mallet to objects and enemies. Her mallet can also be used as a boomerang. Baliey also voiced Harley in a small role for Lego Batman: The Movie – DC Super Heroes Unite (2013)

  • Meghan Strange

One shot is all some need to make their mark. Strange has voiced Harley only in Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2008), but she's still remembered fondly. This Harley was a black and white 20s flapper and top henchwoman to the Joker. She helped Bat-Mite save the cape crusader from the clown prince of crime in her only episode appearance.

  • Janyse Jaud

Janyse Jaud was the first actress to voice Harley in the recent motion comics series put out by DC, Batman: Black and White (2013). Viewers can see Harley defend her Mister J. while being dragged back to her  patted cell in Arkham Asylum.

  • Margot Robbie

Robbie is the first actress to play Harley Quinn on the big screen, with her appearance influenced by the version of her New 52 incarnation in the comics, who is a sweet, impressionable young woman who jumps into a vat of acid for Mr. J.
