The MTV Movie Awards are probably best known for their wacky awards.

In 1996, the onetime award best sandwich in a movie went to the ham and cheese sandwich in Smoke. The awards show, which launched in 1992, also memorably hands out a best kiss award, and viewers have come to expect a re-creation of said kiss by the winners while accepting their award (think Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's winning streak).

But onstage smooches aren’t the only reason that people tune in. Over the years, the show has gained a reputation for its anything-goes moments: Call it the Oscars' sillier, crazier second cousin.

Ahead of Sunday's ceremony — which is now called the MTV Movie & TV Awards, as small-screen categories have been added for the first time this year — THR takes a look back at some of the most memorable moments over the years.

  • Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling re-enact "The Notebook" kiss

One of the most memorable moments in the show's history occurred when Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams won best kiss at the 2005 ceremony. The pair re-enacted their iconic kiss from The Notebook to the joy of fans everywhere.

  • "Would it kill you every once in a while to play a little Foghat?"

In 1999, Jim Carrey accepted the award for best male performance for his performance in The Truman Show. He gave his speech as a member scraggly-haired hippie — he hadn't told anyone of his plan, including MTV — and didn't even break character after the acceptance with presenter Janeane Garofalo, who said: "Afterwards when we were walking off, I tried to talk to him as Jim and he wasn’t having it."

  • Sarah Silverman jokes about Paris Hilton's jail sentence

With Paris Hilton's prison term looming, 2007 host Sarah Silverman made an off-color snipe that Hilton became visibly upset over. Silverman, who looked instantly sorry, admitted later that she regretted making the joke: "I went for it. But then I looked down and saw a man in her face with a camera."

  • James Franco and Seth Rogen smoke pot onstage

The director zoomed out to a wide shot and audience shots when Seth Rogen pulled a baggie of marijuana out of his pocket while he presented an award with James Franco. They also produced a joint and a lighter and smoked it on live TV.

  • When "The Golden Girls" parodied "Clueless"

Three of The Golden Girls reenacted some of Clueless' crassest oneliners (and plaid outfits!), with Estelle Getty as Cher, Betty White as Dionne, and Rue McClanahan as Tai.

  • Sacha Baron Cohen lands on Eminem

To promote the release of his movie Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen came as the character to the 2009 Movie Awards, where he "flew" over the crowd on strings until he was dropped on top of Eminem, who stormed out shortly after. They revealed later that the stunt had been planned.

  • Aubrey Plaza tries to "Kanye" Will Ferrell

At the awards show in 2013, Aubrey Plaza approached the stage while Will Ferrell accepted his award for comedic genius of the year. She tried to take his popcorn trophy before giving up and returning to her seat, and reportedly was escorted out of the event shortly after.

  • Tom Cruise performs with Jennifer Lopez

Tom Cruise reprised his role as Les Grossman from Tropic Thunder for the 2010 Movie Awards. The actor danced to Ludacris' song "Get Back" before being joined onstage by J.Lo.

  • Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen have a makeout session after winning 'Best Kiss'

After receiving the award for their kiss in Talladega Nights, the comedians shared a passionate kiss in front of a stunned audience. Taking things to the extreme, the stars land on the floor and roll around in each other’s arms while remaining lip-locked.

  • Zac Efron Strips Onstage

During the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, Zac Efron accepted the award for Best Shirtless Performance. During his speech, presenter Rita Ora ran behind him to unbutton his shirt, leaving a dumbfounded Efron to play along and rip the rest of his shirt off.

  • Alexander Skarsgard Forgets His Pants

When presenting at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, Tarzan star Skarsgard went onstage sans pants. Dressed in a tuxedo top with his tighty whities, the actor stunned audience members with his bare ensemble.

  • Robert Downey Jr.'s Accepts Generation Award

During the 2015 ceremony, the cast of the Avengers graced the stage to present their co-star Downey for the Generation Award. Prior to Downey giving his acceptance speech, his costars Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth kneeled and bowed down to the Iron Man star. Downey Jr. jokingly said throughout the 34 years MTV has aired, he has “squandered, resisted, surrendered, repented, [and] labored."

  • Emma Stone Receives Trailblazer Award

Stone accepted the award for the first ever Trailblazer Award during the 2012 ceremony. Visibly emotional, Stone used her speech to express her admiration for her own heroes which include, Bill Murray, Charlie Chaplin, J.D. Salinger and Gilda Radner. After giving her heartfelt thanks to the Hollywood icons, Stone noted that each of them inspired her to be her authentic self. "I hope that you'll find your trailblazers. And, trust me, I do not need to be one of them. I probably shouldn't be one of them,” Stone told the audience. Stone took a moment in her speech to encourage viewers and the audience members to embrace their uniqueness, rather than fear it. “Sometimes when you're an adult — what sets you apart can sometimes feel like a burden and it's not. And a lot of the time, it's what makes you great,” said Stone.

  • Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis Get Handsy Onstage

On hand to promote their raunchy film, Friends with Benefits, Timberlake and Kunis attempted to defy the dating rumors hinting that the pair was an item. To prove their relationship was platonic, Kunis and Timberlake both placed their hands on personal areas claiming that they felt no physical connection while doing it.

  • Kristen Stewart Drops her Golden Popcorn

Moments after receiving the award for Best Female Performance in Twilight, Stewart accidentally dropped her award. Visibly embarrassed, Stewart quickly scooped up the award and finished her speech saying, “I was just as awkward as you thought I would be.” A new trophy had to be delivered to Stewart, for popcorn pieces chipped off from the fall.

  • Chris Brown and Mike Myers Have a Dance Battle

During his opening monologue at the 2008 show, Myers was interrupted by Brown jumping onstage. Questioning Myers on whether his monologue would only consist of jokes, Myers suggests a dance battle to settle their argument over his monologue. A crew of dancers danced alongside Myers and Brown, with a cheering audience watching Myers comically dance alongside the R&B singer.

  • Halle Berry ‘Exposes’ Hugh Jackman and John Travolta

Onstage to present the award for Best Movie, Berry expressed her frustration over how much she had to bare in her film, Swordfish. With her costars alongside her, Berry dared Jackman and Travolta to show some skin like she did, to which they obliged.

  • Jimmy Fallon Gets Handsy with Sandra Bullock

Prior to presenting, Fallon encourages Bullock to try an improv comedy technique where he uses his hands as her own. While introducing the nominees for Best Male Performance, Fallon picks Bullock’s nose and shockingly grabs her breasts, while the audience laughed and cheered on.
