The next installment, 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Tales,' hits theaters May 26.
The five-part franchise began in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl. The first three films followed the adventures of William Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp).
Based on a Walt Disney-themed ride, the movies take place in the 17th century, where pirates are free from the ruling powers of the British Empire, The Spanish Empire and The East India Company. The themes in the movies touch upon old legends centered around the sea. Along the way, the pirates run into fictitious creatures and ancient curses on their adventures.
Sparrow and Turner return in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Tales, which finds Sparrow searching for the trident of Poseidon against nemesis, Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem). (A sixth film is said to be in development.)
Below are trailers from each of the Pirates of the Caribbean films (along with some mild spoilers for those who haven't seen the movies).
William Turner is a blacksmith who must save the love of his life, Elizabeth Swann, after she is kidnapped by Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and his crew. He teams up with Sparrow, who seeks revenge after Barbossa left him stranded on an island and stole his ship, The Black Pearl. The two soon find out the ship is under an ancient curse that turns the crew into skeletons when night falls.
The crew cannot live or die until each member’s blood spills over a collection of Aztec gold coins. The problem is one of the original crew members is missing. "Bootstrap" Bill Turner was left at sea and is kept in locker of Davy Jones. Turner's blood is the last remaining component to break the curse.
Barbossa is convinced that Swann is the daughter of Bill and is determined to spill her blood over the treasure. Will, the real son of Bill, knows he is the only one who can save her and break the ancient curse.
Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander), head of the East India Trading Company, sentences Will and Elizabeth to death after helping Sparrow escape in the previous film. A pardon is offered to Will to bring back Sparrow’s compass. The compass will lead the person holding it to the thing they desire most. Beckett hopes the compass will guide him to the "Dead Man’s Chest." Inside the chest is the heart of Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), the captain of The Flying Dutchman. The one who holds the heart controls the sea.
Meanwhile, Sparrow is reminded of a debt he owes to Jones. He is expected to join his crew of dying sailors who are promised to gain life again after working on his ship for 100 years — unless Sparrow finds the heart of Davy Jones for himself.
The adventure becomes a race to find the chest all while avoiding The Kraken, a sea monster that destroys ships under the control of Jones.
Barbossa, Will, Elizabeth and the crew of The Black Pearl must sail to the ends of the Earth to rescue Sparrow from the Locker of Davy Jones. As one of the nine Pirate Lords, Sparrow is needed to release the goddess Calypso to overthrow Jones and Beckett, who now controls the sea.
Sparrow teams up with Barbossa on another unexpected adventure. He runs into Angelica (Penélope Cruz), a woman from his past whom he is unsure whether to trust. She forces him upon the Queen Anne’s Revenge and quickly learns who is the captain: Blackbeard (Ian Shane). He is on the quest to find the Fountain of Youth, a location that only Sparrow knows.
Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) escapes from the Devil’s Triangle and wishes to get revenge on the pirate who sent him there, Sparrow. Salazar is determined to kill him and every pirate at sea. The only way for Sparrow to survive is to find the Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that gives anyone who possesses it complete control of the sea.
Will Turner is returning in the newest adventure.
