'Happy Endings' Guest Star Megan Mullally Sings the Show's Praises
The Emmy winner plays Penny's upbeat mom on the ABC comedy.
Will & Grace star Megan Mullally, who also voices Chief on Childrens Hospital and plays the sexually charged Tammy Two on Parks and Recreation, landed her guest role on Wednesday’s Happy Endings after introducing herself to star, Casey Wilson.
“We met at a party,” she says when The Hollywood Reporter visited the ABC comedy’s set to watch her and Wilson’s big finale scene.
“I’ve been watching the show all season,” she continues. “So, I just introduced myself [to Casey] and I said that I thought the show was great and I thought that she was great on it. Casey mentioned that to someone and then I ended up being on the show.”
Mullally plays Dana, mother to Wilson’s Penny. “They wrote me a really amazing part,” the Emmy winner says.
“She is just a very optimistic lady,” Mullally explains. “When Penny was a kid they used to have a singing duo called 'Two Hearts Beat As One.' ”
“I say that we’re like the Gilmore Girls but we’re better," Wilson interjects. "Because we came first."
On the episode, Dana arrives for a performance in town and Penny’s friends just love how she can see the positive side of anything. Then, Dana ends up suggesting that she and Penny revisit the old days and sing a duet.
“We have a big number at the end,” Mullally says. “We choreographed it ourselves, by the way. We would like to be credited for that.”
It’s true. THR was there to watch as the magic unfolded during their performance of Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn.” The two women seemed to have the basic choreography down, but added a few funny last minute twists while they were rehearsing.
“If any Broadway houses need a choreographer,” Wilson offers.
“We’re available,” Mullally adds. “We work fast too. Like, we do it in the hair and makeup trailers.”
Happy Endings airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. on ABC.
