ABC Lands Medical Comedy From Dan Fogelman, Simon Stephenson
ABC is looking to The Neighbors and Galavant creator Dan Fogelman for a new take on a medical show.
The network has handed out a hefty put-pilot commitment with a hefty penalty attached to Family Practice, a comedy from writer/doctor Simon Stephenson, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Family Practice, which landed at ABC in a competitive situation, centers on a dysfunctional family of doctors who run a family practice in small-town America.
Stephenson will write the script and executive produce the comedy alongside Fogelman, who will serve as a non-writing executive producer via his ABC Studios-based production company Rhode Island Avenue.
Stephenson was recently named one of U.K. trade paper Screen International's "Stars of Tomorrow 2014." His spec feature script Frisco was third on the 2013 Blacklist. His credits include ITV's Patrick Stewart starrer Eleventh Hour and memoir Let Not the Waves of the Sea. Stephenson is repped by UTA and the U.K.'s Knight Hall Agency.
For Fogelman, Family Practice marks his second sale of the development season. It joins Fox's untitled John Stamos comedy, which landed at the network with a put-pilot commitment. The producer behind ABC's two-season comedy Neighbors next has ABC's high-concept musical fairytale comedy Galavant set for midseason. He's repped by WME, Management 360 and Bruce Gellman.
Family Practice joins a growing list of medical-themed projects this development season as the genre is one of the larger trends this year.
