Adult Swim Sets Cast for 'Team Unicorn' Pilot
Jane Lynch and Alan Tydyk will also voice characters in the live-action/animated comedy.
Adult Swim has set the cast for its live-action/animated hybrid pilot Team Unicorn.
The quarter-hour pilot is described as a modern send-up of Saturday morning kids' shows. It features a team of four culture-obsessed heroines who present darkly ironic twists on '80s cartoon tropes.
From the creators of Robot Chicken, Team Unicorn started as a multimedia production team that consisted of Michele Boyd (The Guild) Clare Grant (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Milynn Sarley and Rileah Vanderbilt (Hatchet). Grant and Vanderbilt will executive produce the Adult Swim pilot and star alongside Sarley and Attack of the Show's Alison Haislip. The four will play Team Unicorn and their cartoon counterparts.
Glee's Jane Lynch will voice villain Dark Puba and Suburgatory's Alan Tudyk will voice her sidekick, Chummy Cherub. Tara Strong (Fairly Odd Parents) voices Billy, the boy with the ability to summon Team Unicorn, and Mad's Kevin Shinick will voice the show's announcer -- the staple of cartoon shows that inspired the pilot.
Dan Milano (Greg the Bunny) penned the pilot, which explores the adventures of four mythical unicorn heroines who masquerade as human girls. Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich serve as exec producers via their Stoopid Buddy Stoodios banner.
"Team Unicorn is in the spirit of Sailor Moon and The Powerpuff Girls with a sprinkling of Voltron and Josie and the Pussycats," Grant and Vanderbilt said. Green will direct the pilot. Brian Sheesley (Dan vs.) is the animation director and Sean Becker (Holliston) is the live-action director. The trio are all Emmy winners, as are Lynch, Shinick, Senreich and Milano.
Adult Swim put Team Unicorn into development last year, announcing the project as part of its 2013 upfront slate.
