Starz' American Gods adaptation is adding a familiar face to the mix.

Former Sleepy Hollow star Orlando Jones has joined the cast as Mr. Nancy, it was announced Wednesday.

Based on Neil Gaiman's best-selling fantasy novel of the same name, American Gods centers on a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society's modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon (The 100's Ricky Whittle), is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a con man — but in reality one of the older gods — on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation for a battle with the new deities.

The old African trickster god more commonly known as Anansi, Mr. Nancy also is one of Mr. Wednesday’s (Ian McShane) oldest confidantes. Like Wednesday, Nancy is ready to bring this new America (and its new gods) to its knees, desperate to light a fire and watch the whole world burn.

Additionally, Demore Barnes (12 Monkeys) has signed on to play Mr. Ibis, the keeper of stories, past and present, and he recounts them with great relish. His old-fashioned sensibilities do not preclude a wry wit.

The duo join an impressive cast that also includes Emily Browning (Laura Moon), Pablo Schreiber (Mad Sweeney), Yetide Badaki (Bilquis), Bruce Langley (Technical Boy), Crispin Glover (Mr. World), Jonathan Tucker (Low Key Lyesmith), Gillian Anderson (Media), Peter Stormare (Czernobog) and Cloris Leachman (Zorya Vechernyaya).

Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) and Michael Green (The River) will pen the script and serve as showrunners on the FremantleMedia North America project. David Slade will direct the pilot and additional episodes. FMNA's Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk will executive produce alongside Fuller, Green, Slade and Gaiman. Starz senior vps original programming Marta Fernandez and Ken Segna will oversee for the network.

Production on the 10-episode first season is underway in Toronto.

An original MADtv cast member, Jones most recently starred on the first two seasons of Sleepy Hollow.
