Anderson Cooper Honors Sandy Hook Victims on Emotional 'Anderson Live' (Video)
The talk-show host pays tribute to the 20 children and six adult school staff who died in Friday's tragedy.
Anderson Cooper took Tuesday's edition of Anderson Live to honor the victims of the Sandy Hook school shootings, naming each person and also showing their photos.
This THR editor was in the audience at the syndicated daytime show, which films at CBS Studios in New York, and spotted several people crying while images flashed onscreen of the 20 children and six adult school staffers who were killed in Friday's horrific massacre.
Kleenex was passed during commercial break. One audience member, a Cooper fan from Haiti, dabbed at her eyes.
On Sunday, President Obama attended a vigil in Newtown, Conn., wiping away tears as he gave a televised speech where he named victims and said: "I can only hope it helps for you to know that you're not alone in your grief -- that our world too has been torn apart and all across this land of ours, we have wept with you."
The next day, David Letterman addressed the tragedy on the Late Show, saying in a seven-minute prepared statement: "Believe me, I'm not dumb enough to think that this is a problem of guns. Before there were guns, people were killing one another. And you can't just say that it's mental health or emotional problems because people with all manner of problems don't necessarily kill each other."
Cooper, who has been covering the aftermath in Newtown for CNN, sounded off alongside Anderson Live guest co-host Judy Gold.
"History remembers that person and rarely does history remember the name of the victim," he said, referencing the shooter, Adam Lanza. "That person’s name shouldn’t be remembered in history books."
He continued: "And just in the thought of not focusing on the killer and remembering his name and trying to remember the names of the victims .... I just wanted to read to you the names of everybody who lost their lives on Friday and just take a moment to remember them."
