McCarthy will direct episodes five and seven of Netflix's Orange Is the New Black's second season (he helmed three in season one); episode 10 of Amazon's first scripted series Alpha House, the sophomore finale of The CW's The Carrie Diaries and episode five of ABC's upcoming limited series The Black Box.

The move comes as McCarthy has made a career behind the camera in recent years, directing multiple episodes of Gossip Girl, White Collar and Lipstick Jungle. The National Geographic Traveler editor-at-large has also written for multiple publications including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and countless others. His acting credits include Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo's Fire, Less Than Zero and Weekend at Bernies, among scores more. His New York Times best-selling memoir, The Longest Way Home, was published in September 2012.

McCarthy is repped by Brian Liebman at Liebman Entertainment and Verve Talent & Literary Agency.
