'Awkward,' 'Suburgatory' Creators Land Pilot Orders at ABC
"Damaged Goods," about sexual politics, and modern "My Fair Lady" entry "Selfie" both hail from Warner Bros. Television and bring the network's comedy pilot haul to 12 -- on par with last year.
ABC is investing in the creators of Awkward and Suburgatory.
The network has picked up Lauren Iungerich's Damaged Goods and Emily Kapnek's Selfie, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Single-camera entry Damaged Goods is described as a comedy about the sexual politics that have changed between men and women in the postfeminist era. The comedy, written and exec produced by Iungerich, earned a hefty pilot production commitment with a series penalty from ABC in September for the project. Damaged Goods hails from Warner Bros. Television, where Iungerich inked a blind script deal in August.
Damaged Goods marks Iungerich's first project since she exited MTV's critical darling Awkward in June. The former showrunner, who fielded multiple script offers from other studios, completed work on season three on the People's Choice Award winner for favorite cable comedy. The ABC comedy marks her first broadcast pilot.
Beyond Damaged Goods, Iungerich also had Bitch Off the Ol' Block with her former MTV boss David Janollari attached in the works at NBC.
Meanwhile, Suburgatory boss Kapnek's Selfie is described as a modern My Fair Lady, a project inspired by the classic musical, and tells the story of a self-obsessed 20-something woman who is more concerned with "likes" than being liked. After suffering a public and humiliating breakup, she becomes the subject of a viral video and suddenly has more social media "followers" than she ever imagined -- but for all the wrong reasons. She then enlists the help of a marketing expert at her company to help repair her tarnished image.
The single-camera comedy marks the first project she has launched since Suburgatory, whose third season premiered midseason on ABC. Kapnek will pen the script and executive produce via her Warner Bros. Television-based Piece of Pie Productions banner. ABC handed out a put pilot commitment to the project in October.
These mark ABC's 11th and 12th comedy pilot orders of the season, on par with the network's 2013 haul.
