Britt Robertson to Star in Netflix Comedy 'Girlboss'

The 13-episode series is inspired by Sophia Amoruso, founder of fashion brand Nasty Gal.

Britt Robertson is returning to the small screen.

The Life Unexpected and Tomorrowland star has booked the leading role in Netflix's comedy series Girlboss, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The series is inspired by the New York Times best-selling book #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso, founder of fashion brand Nasty Gal. Robertson will star as Sophia, a rebellious, broke anarchist who refuses to grow up. She stumbles upon her passion of selling vintage clothes online and becomes an unlikely businesswoman. As she builds her retail fashion empire, she realizes the value and the difficulty of being the boss of her own life.

Pitch Perfect's Kay Cannon created the series, exec produces and serves as showrunner. Exec producers include Charlize Theron, Laverne McKinnon, Amoruso and Christian Ditter, the latter of whom will direct the single-camera comedy series. Girlboss will premiere in 2017.

Amoruso is the founder and owner of fashion brand Nasty Gal. The company was cited as one of the fastest growing by Inc. Magazine in 2012. She developed a loyal following of young women via social media. The New York Times called her a "Cinderella of tech" a few years ago. Her autobiography, #Girlboss, was published in 2014.

For Robertson, the Netflix comedy comes as she next stars in feature The Space Between Us, due Aug. 19; Mr. Church, due Sept. 9; and DreamWorks' A Dog's Purpose, due later this year.

Last year, Robertson had back-to-back features with Nicholas Sparks' The Longest Ride and Tomorrowland, opposite George Clooney. More recently, Robertson reunited with Life Unexpected creator Liz Tigelaar for a recurring role on Hulu comedy Casual. Girlboss marks her return to series regular television following Life Unexpected, The Secret Circle and Under the Dome. Robertson is repped by Innovative Artists.
