'Castle': Watch a Promo for Stana Katic's Last Episode

Will the season finale end with her death?
ABC

The end of the road for Detective Kate Beckett has arrived.

ABC on Monday released a promo for the May 16 season finale of ABC's Castle — the final episode for leading lady Stana Katic.

The promo — which sets up a potential end to the show's season-long LokSat case — sets up what may be a dire ending for Katic's fan favorite.

"Everything ends in tragedy, even an epic love story like yours," a mystery villain says in the promo. The nature of the promo immediately begs the question: Will Katic's Kate Beckett join the roster of the female leads who have been killed off this season?

ABC has yet to renew Castle for a potential ninth season. The series, produced in-house by ABC Studios, recently re-upped lead Nathan Fillion for another season, and the remainder of the cast is set to return, save for Katic and co-star Tamala Jones, who were both let go as the series looks to cut costs. The network was due to make a decision on the fate of the veteran procedural on Friday but extended the deadline. A verdict on the show's future is expected to come this week ahead of the network's upfront presentation to Madison Avenue ad buyers in New York.

Insiders tell THR that producers have filmed two endings to the season: one solving the season-long LokSat case in a finale with a cliffhanger and the other bringing closure to the series. Either way, writing out Katic and Jones opens the door for multiple incarnations of Castle as producers plan what would be a major reset that, sources say, could focus on Fillion's Richard Castle and his detective daughter in a more by-the-book procedural.

Should the series opt to kill off Beckett, Castle would join a rapidly growing list of dramas to have offed female leads this season that includes Sleepy Hollow, Arrow, The Americans, Vikings, The 100 and Hap and Leonard.
