CBS' Jim Gaffigan Comedy Moves to TV Land With Series Order

Repeat episodes of "The Gaffigan Show" will air on fellow Viacom-owned cabler Comedy Central a week after their debut.

Jim Gaffigan's long-gestating semi-autobiographical family comedy has landed at a new home: TV Land.

TV Land has handed out a 10-episode series order to The Gaffigan Show, the single-camera semi-autobiographical comedy from Sony Pictures Television that stars Gaffigan as a happily married and harried New York father of five — which he is in real life. The series will debut in 2015 on TV Land, with fellow Viacom-owned cable network Comedy Central airing episodes of the series a week after they debut. The deal capitalizes on Gaffigan's audience at Comedy Central, where he has been the subject of multiple stand-up specials.

Gaffigan penned the pilot alongside Fedora Entertainment's Peter Tolan, with both on board to exec produce alongside Jeannie Gaffigan. Fedora's Michael Wimer and Gaffigan's manager at Brillstein Entertainment Partners, Alex Murray and Sandy Wernick, also executive produce. Seth Gordon (The Goldbergs) directed the pilot.

The series pickup at TV Land comes after CBS tried twice to develop the project. The comedy first earned a pilot order in January 2013 and had Oscar winner Mira Sorvino attached to co-star as Gaffigan's wife, with Christian Barillas and Tongayi Chirisa in supporting roles. CBS passed on the comedy in May 2013 and instead opted to redevelop it for the 2014-15 season.

The comedy was recast with Adam Goldberg, Michael Ian Black and Ashley Williams; Chirisa remained on board. CBS ultimately passed on the retooled comedy in May before studio SPT opted to shop the passion project to other networks.

"I am thrilled that TV Land is giving us this opportunity to do this show that Peter, Jeannie and I have been fine-tuning for three years," Gaffigan said. "I'm probably most excited about the craft service. I gained 20 pounds for this role. OK, fine. It was 40 pounds."
 
Added TV Land president Larry W. Jones: "We love Jim Gaffigan’s brand of humor. The second we saw this show we knew we wanted it on TV Land. The audience that TV Land is targeting is Gen Xers who are raising families so we love that this show reflects their world. Only funnier.”

The Gaffigan comedy marks Sony's latest series to land at a new home. The studio most recently revived cult comedy Community for a sixth season at Yahoo after NBC opted to cancel the series from showrunner Dan Harmon.

SPT has a history of reviving series, including Damages and Unforgettable, the latter of which was revived for a second season at CBS after the network canceled it following its freshman run. The summer series is currently in its third season on the network.

For TV Land, the Gaffigan comedy becomes the network's second single-cam comedy, joining its recently launched Jennifer Falls. It joins The Exes, Hot in Cleveland, The Soul Man and Darren Starr's Younger at the Viacom-owned network, which recently axed Kirstie after one season.
