CBS, 'Mike & Molly' Writer Developing Spouses-Turned-Stepsiblings Comedy (Exclusive)

Inspired by the life of author Adrienne Brodeur, the Alloy multicamera effort from scribe Julie Bean revolves around a couple who ends their marriage but opt to stay in each other's lives when her father and his mother elope.

CBS is turning the family comedy on its head.

The network has given script orders to an untitled multicamera comedy about a young couple that decides to end their marriage and part ways but opt to stay in each other's lives as stepbrother and stepsister after her father and his mother elope and tie the knot.

Mike & Molly writer-producer Julie Bean is on board to pen the project, which is inspired by the life of consultant Adrienne Brodeur. The latter, author of Man Camp, founded literary magazine Zoetrope: All-Story with Francis Ford Coppola and served as its editor in chief until 2002.

Brodeur penned a New York Times article about her unique family in February, detailing her mother's marriage to her then-husband's father at the ages of 61 and 75, respectively.

"My mother became my husband's stepmother and, in doing so, became my own mother-in-law," she wrote. "My father-in-law morphed into my stepfather, and somewhere in this murky mess, my husband became my brother. O.K., my stepbrother, but still! (Good thing we didn’t have children to complicate matters.)"

Alloy Entertainment's Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo are on board to executive produce the project alongside Bean, with Brodeur on board the Warner Bros. Television comedy as an executive consultant.

The comedy continues Bean's relationship with the network, where she served as a co-producer/writer on Gary Unmarried.

The sale marks the latest for Alloy this development season; the WBTV-based company has dramas Midnighters (at Fox) and Confessions of a Backup Dancer at the CW.
