CNN is heading to another decade. After summer's strong showing from The Sixties, the cable news network is reteaming with Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman's Playtone and Herzog & Company on The Seventies.

The documentary series was one of the more high-profile launches on the network this year — though unlike its contemporaries top-lined by Mike Rowe and Lisa Ling, The Sixties was naturally a limited run.

The Seventies will run over an eight-part documentary and pick up where the last went off.

"Television in the '70s," the first episode, will bow in summer 2015 and chronicle the socially relevant pop culture of the time like M.A.S.H., All in the Family and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Subsequent episodes will devote attention to the Iran Hostage Crisis, the kidnapping of Patty Hearst and the massacre at the Munich Olympics.

Sixties companion The Sixties: The Assassination of President Kennedy earned two Emmy nominations in 2014.
